The saga of my computer goes on! This morning I finally decided to order the bits I wanted from a company reccomended by Thom. They seem pretty good and their prices are very resonable. Order placed without a problem and so far, so good.
Then I get an email - “please fax us a copy of [...]

As I’m trying to not use my desktop system (the strange noises seem to grow in number every time I contemplate the power switch) until my new system is nearing readiness (should really get on with arranging that!), I’ve been using the laptop more and more. The 12″ screen is OK wheil on the road, [...]

One slightly annoying thing about the laptop running FreeBSD/Gnome is that presently I can’t get the microphne to work, so using the recently installed Skype isn’t as great an experience as it should be. Of course I also had these troubles with windows when first trying to use Skype, so I’m not overly surprised. Looks [...]

As part of my cleanup of the “office” I’ve decided it’s finally time to do something about all these hard drives I have lying around. They need to go. Before that though, they need to be wiped. Totally.
I’ve seen a few program that seem to do the job, and even some that are free, so [...]

Machines don’t have a soul. Or do they?
After writing yesterday how I felt that the time was ripe to change my desktop system, this morning it started making an ominuous noise. The intensity grew as I tried to save my work via the ssh session I was using… Too late! Blue screen of death [...]

My recent experiences with setting up FreeBSD on my laptop have persuaded me that it might be time to think about upgrading my home systems. Having seen how well X handles multiple monitors, I’m also starting to think that perhaps I should move to a multi-monitor setup. It certainly provides a lot more “real estate”!
Presently [...]

Following the problems I experienced in Stuttgart with the laptop’s output, I decided to spend some time today trying to fix it. To be honest I was rather too tired to do anything more involved after getting up rather early to head home!
The log file is your friend when doing this, though it does have [...]

tonight I tried to give a presentation using my X40 with an external monitor, but there was no output! I could see my screen, but as soon as it was on dual/external only mode (after pressing fn + F5) the screen and the vga output was blanked! The cursor appeared, but there was nothing else. [...]

In Stuttgart for ApacheCon 2005 and it’s HOT! Today has been the first day of the hackathon and we spent it in a room without air conditioning. Man was it hot! Too hot, way too hot by far. managed to get some things done, but not as much as might have been achieved if it [...]

Off to work then ApacheCon Europe upon my return! Hopefully AC Europe should be a good event and it’ll certainly be a lot of fun!

The views expressed on this blog are my own. I thought that people would realise they were reading a blog and that views expressed are, therefore, my own. Apparently this isn’t the case with some people.
Yesterday I did something I very rarely do - I removed some articles I had posted. I did it as [...]

Went out briefly last night and tried to align the scope, but for the first time ever it hit the stops! It doesn’t normally do that, but it did start me wondering if I had the scope in the correct “home” position. I did a search and found this site http://www.weasner.com/etx/autostar/as_home.html which describes how to [...]

So London wins the 2012 Olympics. Let’s hope that it lives up to the expectations and not the traditional delivery levels of these grand schemes.
The forced evictions of businesses are already well underway and no doubt many more will follow. Lets hope the promised investment in transport actually produces results, though the extra bus lanes [...]

One of the issues that I try to follow when I have time is that of identity on the internet. I believe it’s going to become increasingly important and a solution is way overdue. Ben pointed me at http://www.identityblog.com/ today and it makes interesting reading. I find myself in agreement on a lot of [...]

The biggest problem that the gDesklets now have is that they won’t remember their position! Every time I restart they sit under the cursor until placed somewhere on the desktop. I’ve posted to the gDesklets discussion board and found I’m nto the only one with this problem, but so far no solutions have been forthcoming. [...]

I finally got round to installing the AutoStar software on my new laptop. I did contemplate not instaling it and just using the old laptop for the telescope, but having seen a lot of reports of the software working much better on win XP, especially the all important imaging app for the LPI, I decided [...]

After some playing I’ve managed to write a small gDesklet that correctly reports my battery life and battery/ac status on FreeBSD. It’s pretty damned basic, but works quite well.
Actually writing the display script proved quite straightforward, but getting it to look as I wanted is taking longer. The “Developers Book” on the gDesklets site is [...]

A friend brought my attention to this url, http://cia.navi.cx/stats/author/dreid.
The submissions to APR and httpd are certainly mine, but the recent ones to OpenBeOS don’t look as though they are mine given my position about not working on OpenBeOS (now with the silly name of Haiku). The commits look like things I have some vague [...]
