Another work day draws to a close.
Just a few ramblings on life
Nice warm sunny day here. Chilling out with an ice cream and a cold drink!
Now that the desktop is starting to settle down it was time to look at support for my iPod Shuffle and ripping tracks from CD. gtkpod proved to be the solution for the first and Grip seems to do a good job for the second one. Took less than 20 mins to install both, which [...]
So, the free ‘nv’ driver that comes with Xorg doesn’t support dual head or dvi output. I’m now starting to really regret buying the nVidia card. According to a few of the sites I’ve read the free ‘ati’ driver supports dual head and so had I bought an ATI card I#d be sitting here using [...]
City Link - what a waste of space! Their staff are extremely unhelpful, turning to sarcasm and defensive comments at the merest suggestion of a problem that might be their doing.
The story starts on Tuesday. After ordering a couple of things that would be delivered by City Link on Wednesday. That should have been [...]
After several abortive attempts, I now have an X desktop running on the new machine and have managed to get a lot of the apps I want installed. The fact that the new machine is amd64 is causing a few issues as many of the ports don’t work requiring i386! This is a pain, but [...]
nVidia don’t produce their drivers for FreeBSD AMD64! The bundled source code builds OK, but the binary object is 32-bit and so can’t be used.
While it’s good that nVidia produce these packages it really isn’t an open source solution. The company try to trade on their “open source” friendliness, but that’s just marketing. Apparently people [...]
The FreeBSD 6 BETA 2 iso worked a treat and so now FreeBSD 6 is installed on the new machine. After installing cvsup I updated the source tree and rebuilt, then updated the ports and rebuilt those as well. Now I’m just installing gnome from ports. even on this machine (which seems a lot faster [...]
The bleeding edge isn’t a place I normally visit, but the newly constructed desktop machine appears to be closer to the “bleeding edge” than I realised! It’s so close that freeBSD 5.4 doesn’t fully support the motherboard, but (apparently) 6 does, so I’m downloading a 6 Beta ISO image to burn and try and install [...]
Frances had been ill for some time and was admitted to hospital on Saturday. She slipped into a coma this morning and never woke up. Friends and family were with her when she died and she wasn’t in pain.
This picture (Frances is on the right) was taken a few years ago with Anne, her constant [...]
