I was in cairo last week and took the opportunity to go to the famous Egyptian Museum. when I did the pyramids a few years ago it wasn’t an experience I was keen to repeat. The effort involved in getting there and coping with the people trying to fleece you really spoilt the day. Seeing [...]

Windows 2000 DAV client worked really well but as soon as XP came along it stopped working. It’s one of the more annoying aspects of XP, but having fought it a few times and tried all sorts of workarounds, I finally found http://www.hss.caltech.edu/help/unix/admin/web/apache-webdav-xp. Following what’s there has gotten it working again for customers. How long [...]

One of the terms that’s crept into the “buzzword bingo” vocabulary recently is “semantic web”. To be honest I still have no idea what it really means and when I try to find good definitions via any of the search engines, I fail. It’s not a term that means anything or conveys an idea to [...]

Yesterday was a day that I learned a dirty, dark secret that leaves me feeling a little dirty and ashamed. In retrospect it’s not a secret, it was right there had I taken the time to look for it. I suppose I shuld have known, but I just never thought it would happen…
One of the [...]

From time to time the pace of modern life can be just a little bit too much, so when I travel with work it’s nce to sometimes leave the laptop and disappear from the electronic world for a couple of days. It’s liberating in so many ways. returning home I found only a few emails [...]

One thing that Apache does very poorly is news and announcements. I’ve written before about the problems and issues around the topic and since then nothing has changed.
Chatting with Ben the other day around this subject he suggested we simply expand the information that projects can provide to projects.apache.org to icnlude their own feeds of [...]

Thom very kindly pointed me at this blog entry by Ross Burton about projects.apache.org using doap.
It’s always gratifying to see comments like this. I’ve emailed the folks at Useful Information telling them we’re using DOAP as a courtesy and to see if they have any comments about the additional items we’re using. I’m hopeful they’ll [...]

Sometimes you have to look twice to believe your eyes. I had such an occasion tonight while watching “Deal or No Deal”. (It was a favourite of Annes, so watching it the day of her funeral seemed like the correct thing to do) When they picked the contestant the name thatt was chosen was “Flash”. [...]

Today was Anne’s funeral. The church service was good and the cremation went smoothly. It’s not the sort of day that you can say was good, but it all went well.
It was good to see various family members and friends that I hadn’t seen for a while, or ever in some cases! It’s very true [...]

My laptop has bluetooth, my mobile has bluetooth. So they should be able to communicate. Seems simple enough. I’ve done it in windows XP, but never tried it under FreeBSD until today. I figured that as the support has been around for a while there would be some useful little applications to smooth the way [...]

If we admit it, regardless of how much we dislike our jobs, there is a certain loyalty inherit in working for a company. When talking with colleagues you may complain about things, rant about injustices and stupidity you see, but when talking to people outside the company you gloss over the problems. We all do [...]

It’s a very sad day. Anne was an incredible lady and she will be very sadly missed by us all. The funeral takes place next Tuesday in Dundee.
The above picture is Anne (left) with her long time friend and companion Frances, who died last year. The world is a sadder place without them.

It’s nice to see Mads getting a bit of recognition for all the work he does. Without his support projects.apache.org would never have gotten to where it is and we wouldn’t have asylum going through it’s birthing process.

Over the recent few months I’ve spent a fair bit of time working on projects.apache.org. It’s an idea that I had stored away in my memory for a very long time and one that I strongly believed in. Now that it’s almost complete I still have trouble believing that it’s actually happened. The basic concept, [...]

Sitting here my toes are really quite frozen! The reason is another session outside with the telescope. Having lovely clear skies I decided that despite the cold it would be worth setting it up again and spending some time with it. It’s been a little while since my last attempt and I’ve learned a few [...]
